WORK DESCRIPTION (ENGLISH)

“The title of the work »Translation« is also the  focus of the composition itself, which was composed at the beginning of 2013. In this piece I “translate” different musical styles into a single tonal language which is multifaceted, malleable and open. In order to achieve further rhythmic possibilities, I added a marimba to extend the color palette to the already existing setting of the chamber orchestra. The rhythm is the driving force in this composition by making a connection to jazz by forming some of the groundwork for the piece, as the focus on the soloistic and individual for example. In »Translation« I have incorporated this thought and based the work on a concertino form. However, the solo part is not confined to one instrument. Instead a variation of soloists or groups of soloists alternately emerge from the collective of the orchestra. One could say the work contains “composed improvisations” over its motifs and themes, according to the motto: How would it sound if one single person could play the “orchestra” and improvise on it? Another central point of this compositions is its pictorial qualities, as I decided to tell a story similar that one experiences in a short film. For me, an important source of inspiration with »Translation« was how I featured composing by ever changing musical imagery that I have added or rather “translated”.  In this case however it is not simply film music without a film but rather a musical story that can now be abstracted, interpreted and translated by each listener on an individual basis.
What if during the world premiere the roof of the  Wiener Konzerthaus  was suddenly torn open by Godzilla and he looked at you through the gapping hole with his large eyes?  Revered audience, fear not!”

WORK DESCRIPTION (GERMAN)

“Der Titel des Werkes »Translation«, das Anfang 2013 entstanden ist, spricht einen zentralen Aspekt der Komposition an.
Ich „übersetze“ in diesem Stück Elemente verschiedener musikalischer Stile in eine Tonsprache, welche facettenreich, plastisch und offen sein soll. Diese stelle ich in einen kammerorchestralen Kontext und erweitere die spezifische Klangfarben-Palette durch ein Marimbaphon, auch deshalb, um weiterführende rhythmische Möglichkeiten zu haben. Der Rhythmus ist ein wichtiger Motor in dieser Komposition und schlägt eine Brücke zum Jazz, welcher einige Grundlagen des Stückes bildet, wie beispielsweise die Konzentration auf das Solistische und Individuelle. In »Translation« habe ich jenen Gedanken eingearbeitet und das Werk an die Form des Concertino angelehnt. Dieses hat allerdings keinen ständigen Solopart. Vielmehr treten unterschiedliche Solisten oder Solistengruppen abwechselnd aus dem Orchesterklang hervor. Man könnte sagen, dass dieses Werk „auskomponierte Improvisationen“ über seine Motive und Themen beinhaltet, nach dem Motto: Wie würde es klingen wenn ein einziger Mensch das Instrument „Orchester“ spielen könnte und auf ihm improvisieren würde? 
Die Bildhaftigkeit ist ein weiterer zentraler Punkt dieser Komposition, denn ich versuche hierbei eine Geschichte, ähnlich eines Kurzfilmes, zu erzählen. Bei »Translation« war für mich das Komponieren in vorgestellten, sich ständig ändernden bewegten Bildern, welche ich assoziativ musikalisch umgesetzt bzw. „übersetzt“ habe, eine wichtige Quelle der Inspiration. Es handelt sich allerdings in diesem Fall nicht um eine Filmmusik ohne Film, sondern um eine musikalische Geschichte, die individuell von jeder Hörerin und jedem Hörer übersetzt, interpretiert und abstrahiert werden kann. 
Was wäre, wenn während der Uraufführung Godzilla plötzlich das Dach des Wiener Konzerthauses aufreißen würde und Sie mit seinen riesigen Augen von oben durch das eindrucksvolle Loch anschauen würde? Zeigen Sie keine Angst, verehrtes Publikum!”
